A flooded apartment, a quick move, and a quiet Florida town that felt like a second chance. We sit down with Kylie of Nuglow By K to share how a life uprooted by Hurricane Maria turned into a mission to help people walk out more confident than they walked in. From first impressions of Vero Beach to the rhythms of Sebastian, this conversation explores how small towns can hold big plans.

We get into the texture that makes Vero special: mom-and-pop restaurants, downtown strolls, and the kind of local spots where people remember your name. Kylie lights up about Blue Agave’s fresh ceviche and the joy of discovering new places tucked near Miracle Mile. Then the thrifting bug takes over—with practical routes, why Viera often delivers premium finds, and the thrill of scoring Egyptian cotton shirts and special edition hardcovers for a few dollars. We connect these hunts to creativity and sustainability, showing how unique style and smart budgets can go hand in hand.

Kylie also opens up about the heart of Nuglow By K: consistent care, a calming experience, and a team that shares one mindset. Whether it becomes a larger flagship or multiple locations, the goal stays the same—each client feels seen, heard, and steady. If you’re nearby, you’ll find Nuglow inside the Beauty Market at Miracle Mile, surrounded by local shops and foodie gems. Come for the recommendations, stay for the story of resilience, and leave with new places to try across Vero Beach.

Brian:

All right. Well, welcome back to the Vero Beach podcast. This is part three of our discussion here with Kylie from New Glow by Kay. And during this episode, we're going to talk about Vero Beach. So, Kylie, uh, what brought you to Vero Beach? Because you're not originally from Vero Beach, correct?

SPEAKER_02:

No. So I'm originally from Puerto Rico. Oh. Yeah. So yeah, lived there 11 years. So basically, my childhood is there. Um, while we were there, we moved because of Hurricane Maria. Yeah. So when that came over, um, our whole entire like apartment flooded. So we had to like move back to New Jersey where my dad's family is, because we lost everything there.

Shawna:

Oh my goodness. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

So we came to New Jersey. We came back to New Jersey. We stayed there for around eight months. And then we were deciding either um Texas or um just like Florida in general. Like, okay, you know, my dad, he's like, Well, I visited Florida once in like 1998. So yeah, in the summer of 1998. I'm like, well, I know sort of how it is, so let's go there first. And we're like, okay, so we wanted like a small, because we were used to it, like a smaller, quiet town. Yeah. Yeah. Cause I like the city, but I don't like living in the city. Exactly. I like to feel like I can go and then I can leave. Exactly. That's what I like to do. So we did there, we originally actually rented here in Vero. Oh, yeah. We rented like what, like for like a year. Yeah, like a year. Um, and then we went to Sebastian, which is next door neighbor. Yeah. We're like, okay, this is what we want. It's very quiet. It's a fish or fishing town thing. Everything's close knit. But you know, we're like, okay, let's stay here. Um, and yeah, we've been here for like close to eight years. Yeah, it's a great area. Yeah, it is. So Vero was the place that you guys first came to then when yeah, because we wanted to check it out, and it was just like when we were researching it, we're like, okay, we want to stay on the East Coast, but we wanted a small town. It was one of those towns when we came here and we told people about it. Like, well, where is Vero? Yeah, where is Sebastian? I'm like, it's like people know about Pom Bay. Most like if you're like they come here in and out like snowbirds, they know. Like, okay, like I'm telling them, listen, it's literally two towns under Pombay. There you go. Oh, okay. I'm like, or if not, Google it, Google Spring. Let me Google it for you. But no, like it's nice, and it's like I like Vero and Sebastian because there's a lot of mom and pop places. Yes. And I love that. I love that. Like, don't get me wrong. I do like my okay, like, you know, like my chain restaurants. Like, I'll say I love chilies. Yeah.

Shawna:

For the triple dipper, I'll eat it.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. Okay, I'll go for that. Yeah. But like I do like my like mom and pop, like pizzeria's, the Chinese places, like just like by the river, right? Like anything around here. Even here in like downtown Vero, there's like so many things here. There's so many things.

Brian:

There's so much. Have you ever been to Blue Agave yet?

SPEAKER_02:

No, but I've heard of it. I have a client because I've got to be there.

Brian:

Yeah, it's right there in downtown Vero. Amazing Mexican, like and what do you call it?

Shawna:

Like elevated Tex Mex. So it's not like authentic Mexican, but it's delicious.

Brian:

It's delicious. You probably like, and they have an appetizer. What's the appetizer?

Shawna:

You definitely have to get the oh the ceviche. It's so good. Oh my god. It's so so good.

Brian:

He's actually in articles for it. It's just incredible.

Shawna:

And they make it fresh every order.

Brian:

Everything's all fresh, yeah.

Shawna:

When you're not working, what do you like to do around town to unwind? I know you're working a lot, but no, okay.

SPEAKER_02:

So I do like shopping and I love thrifting too. I love thrifting. I go to Goodwill a lot. So do we.

Brian:

I know. I mean, they're incredible.

SPEAKER_02:

Listen, listen, Sebastian is horrible. I'm sorry.

Brian:

Really? Okay.

SPEAKER_02:

Their goodwill is like really bad. Here, I go here, I'm like, I find everything. I usually go to like like we all of us, we like thrifting. We go there first. I'm like, okay, if I can't find what I want here, I'm going to the store.

Shawna:

Yes, exactly. But we're like, that's fun. Our son goes to Goodwill so often that today we went there before we came to this interview, and the cashier was like, Oh, Ashton, hey, I didn't even see you standing there. Like she knows I might be.

Brian:

His friends come over from Central Florida and they want to go thrifting with him.

SPEAKER_02:

It's a trend now, like for especially for Gen Z, like the new thing is just like thrifting. Yeah. Okay. Because you can get unique looks that no one else is gonna have. Exactly. Or like some people have their own sense of style. Like, for example, like early tooth that like that type of like clothing, like low rise, stuff like that. They don't have it as often now in like regular clothing. They want to go to the thrift stores, find it there. I love it. Because people are probably giving it there. I'm like, yeah, I go there for books too. Me too. I found the I thought you said bugs.

SPEAKER_00:

I was like, all right. I have to get my hearing tested.

Shawna:

So I was gonna say, are you okay?

SPEAKER_00:

We should not go. Which one are you going to for bugs? Because we're not gonna go there.

SPEAKER_02:

Maybe, maybe, who knows? No, but I got like this hardcover set of this, I forget the name of it. It was one I had seen online once, and I wanted to read it. Usually, and it was like a special edition one. Found all three of them for like, oh my god, like$3 each, mint condition. And I went online and it was like$37 each. Oh my gosh. Isn't that so exciting? It was so exciting. I go there first. I go to the book section and I'm like, okay, what can I find here? Because there's some books like I haven't seen in a long time. Like there's specifically one series I'm trying to collect that I read when I was younger. It's like this spy girl series, like Gallagher Girls.

Shawna:

Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, I read it when I was younger. I could never get over it, but they don't sell it as often. Yeah. So when I see the thrifter, I'm like, oh my god, I should get it. I need to collect it. Like, I do stuff like that.

Brian:

This has been great. Like, I love learning about new new areas to go in the area. I don't, I think you're the first one that we've sat down and said, I love going thrifting during the time.

Shawna:

Oh, yeah, you're the first person that's oh my god.

Brian:

But we get it though, because I mean it it's I remember like I would go into Goodwills and stuff with them, and I'm like, there's nothing here for guys, they have really good clothes.

SPEAKER_02:

I'm like, man, the cure, yeah, it is. No, I found the shirt for my dad, and it was like, what is it? It was like Egyptian cotton or something, some kind of exotic thing for like three bucks. Oh yeah. And I look it up, we look it up online, it's like over$200. And I'm like, and his size, I'm like, where are you getting that?

Brian:

Yeah, exactly.

Shawna:

Here, yeah. I mean, it's a much higher end of things you find in good. Yeah, because you gotta like plan it out.

SPEAKER_02:

Like, okay, you want like good stuff, go to Viera's, like Vieira, their goodwill.

Brian:

Oh, I think I bought the Viera. We haven't been there yet.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, go to Vieira. They have a good goodwill over there.

Shawna:

Oh well, we will. Do you um you know where uh 6th and 12th meet? There's a goodwill tucked back there by the like behind the Taco Bell. Oh, yes, that's okay. Okay, yeah, yeah.

Brian:

That's the one that's really close to us, yeah.

Shawna:

Yeah, okay, good. I was like, I was trying to think like, is there another one somewhere around? Because that's the one we we almost always go to.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, because that one's across the street from this um this Asian, like um oriental place. Yeah. I buy stuff that I I because I like cooking. Like, you know, I like baking, but when I cook, I do like Korean food and like Asian food or just like stuff I got into Indian food because I've tried Indian food. Yeah. I'm trying that.

Shawna:

That's fun. Okay, so when you imagine the future of New Glow, maybe five or 10 years down the road, what do you hope it becomes for Vero Beach and the people who walk through your door?

SPEAKER_02:

Well, I guess just like reiterate like my original purpose. I want people to feel, you know, come in comfortable, confident. They're gonna come out confident. I think for me, like years to come, that's what I want to still be doing. Right. Either that be just like opening like multiple locations or just like having like a big place and like have people go. I want like if I because my dream in like the future is to have a place where I can have people work under me, but that have the same mindset as me. Yeah, right. So it doesn't matter who you get, it will be like you're talking to me. I want that same experience, like just like just like um, like an even out experience, you know, throughout the entire thing. That's what I want. I just want to like continue that. That's awesome.

Brian:

I love that. I love that. Well, Kylie, thank you so much for joining us on the Bureau. Thank you for having me, guys.

Shawna:

Yes, this has been great, and thank you for being moral support.

Brian:

What did everything she say? No, everybody didn't know. We didn't explain where we were sitting, what it looked like, or anything like that. So they didn't know that your mom was sitting here too. So, how was she did she do good? Did she how much percentage of it was true? Majority, okay. Oh, okay. That's great, that's great. Well, again, we appreciate you and appreciate your mom too, and the support that you're you're giving your daughter. That's huge. That's huge. So if you guys have enjoyed the podcast, make sure you leave a review. And if you haven't been by New Glow yet, uh go ahead and tell everybody where you're located so they can be sure they need to come out here and visit you.

SPEAKER_02:

Okay, so I'm gonna be right in Miracle Mile. I'm gonna be inside of a beauty salon called the Beauty Market. So you come in, you ask for me, like, okay, here's Kylie's stuff.

unknown:

Nice.

Brian:

Right in there, yeah. Awesome. There you go. All right. Well, you guys, thank you guys for tuning in to the Vero Beach podcast.

Shawna:

Thanks for listening, neighbor.

Brian:

Like my voice went up weird, and I was like, that is not gonna sound right.

Shawna:

He's gonna be like we're reverting back.

Brian:

Let's let's get that out, let's get that fixed real quick.
